Day 1-3: Marrakesh – The Red City
Your adventure begins in the bustling city of Marrakesh, one of Morocco’s most vibrant and famous destinations. After arriving at the Menara Airport, check into a riad—a traditional Moroccan house with an interior courtyard, offering a peaceful escape from the busy city streets.
Day 1: Explore the Medina and Djemaa el-Fna
Spend your first day in Marrakesh’s Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with winding alleys, historic architecture, and bustling markets. Head to Djemaa el-Fna, the city’s iconic square that comes alive with snake charmers, street food vendors, musicians, and storytellers. Wander through the souks where you can haggle for traditional Moroccan goods like leather, spices, and textiles.
Day 2: Visit Historical Landmarks
Start your second day with a visit to the Bahia Palace, a beautiful example of 19th-century Moroccan architecture. Next, explore the Saadian Tombs, the final resting place of the Saadian dynasty, and the Koutoubia Mosque, the largest mosque in Marrakesh. For a tranquil afternoon, stroll through the Majorelle Garden, a stunning garden once owned by French designer Yves Saint Laurent.
Day 3: Day Trip to the Ourika Valley
Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city with a day trip to the Ourika Valley in the nearby Atlas Mountains. This lush valley offers stunning landscapes, traditional Berber villages, and cool mountain air—a perfect contrast to the heat of Marrakesh. If you’re feeling adventurous, hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls.
Day 4-5: Fes – Morocco’s Cultural Capital
After three days in Marrakesh, take a train or private transfer to Fes, one of the oldest and most culturally rich cities in Morocco. Known for its walled medina, ancient universities, and traditional craftsmanship, Fes is a step back in time.
Day 4: Discover Fes el Bali
Your first day in Fes should be spent exploring the Fes el Bali medina, one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. Start at the Bab Boujloud (Blue Gate) and dive into the narrow streets of this ancient city. Don’t miss the Al Quaraouiyine University, founded in 859 and considered one of the oldest universities in the world. Visit the Bou Inania Madrasa and admire its stunning architecture.
Day 5: Tannery Tour and Royal Palace
On your second day in Fes, visit the famous Chouara Tannery, where leather is still dyed using centuries-old techniques. You can watch the process from one of the nearby terraces, where you’ll also have the chance to purchase hand-crafted leather goods. In the afternoon, visit the Royal Palace (although the interior is closed to the public) and stroll through the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), which offers a different perspective of Moroccan history.
Day 6-7: Sahara Desert – A Journey to the Dunes
No trip to Morocco is complete without experiencing the vast Sahara Desert. From Fes, hire a driver or join a tour for the journey to the edge of the desert, passing through the Middle Atlas Mountains and small Berber towns like Ifrane and Azrou along the way.
Day 6: Arrive in Merzouga and Camel Trek
Arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes, by afternoon. From here, embark on a camel trek into the Sahara Desert as the sun begins to set, casting stunning colors across the golden dunes. You’ll spend the night in a Berber desert camp, where you can enjoy traditional Moroccan cuisine, music, and an unforgettable view of the starry night sky.
Day 7: Sunrise over the Sahara
Wake up early to watch the sun rise over the dunes—a magical experience that will leave you in awe. After breakfast at camp, you’ll trek back to Merzouga on camelback. Spend the rest of the day exploring the desert area, visiting the nearby Khamlia Village, home to a community of Gnawa musicians known for their captivating rhythms and music.
Day 8-10: Mount Toubkal – Trekking in the Atlas Mountains
For the final leg of your 10-day adventure, head to Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, located in the High Atlas Mountains. If you’re up for the challenge, a trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal offers incredible views and a sense of accomplishment.
Day 8: Arrive in Imlil
From the Sahara, you’ll travel to the mountain village of Imlil, the starting point for treks up Mount Toubkal. Imlil is about a 2-hour drive from Marrakesh, so you’ll have the afternoon to settle in, rest, and prepare for the trek ahead.
Day 9: Begin the Toubkal Ascent
On Day 9, begin your ascent to Toubkal Base Camp. The hike usually takes about 5-7 hours, depending on your pace, and winds through scenic valleys, past rivers, and through Berber villages. You’ll spend the night at base camp, enjoying the peaceful mountain atmosphere and getting ready for the summit attempt.
Day 10: Summit Mount Toubkal
On the final day of your Morocco journey, rise early to tackle the final stretch to the summit of Mount Toubkal, standing at 13,671 feet (4,167 meters). From the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains stretching as far as the eye can see, including views of the Sahara Desert to the south.
